Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed the educational ecosystem, including Islamic education. The emergence of generative AI, adaptive learning systems, intelligent tutoring systems, learning analytics, and various digital platforms provides opportunities for personalized learning, wider access to knowledge, administrative efficiency, and the development of students' competencies. However, the integration of AI into Islamic education cannot merely be understood as a matter of technological adoption because Islamic education has a broader orientation, namely developing knowledgeable, faithful, ethical, and responsible human beings. This article aims to analyze the opportunities, challenges, and transformation directions of Islamic education in responding to AI development in the digital era. This study employs a library research method using a critical literature review approach to relevant scientific articles, policy documents, and academic literature. The analysis was conducted through identification, categorization, interpretation, and thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that AI has the potential to strengthen personalized learning, digital-religious literacy, instructional material development, assessment, research, and Islamic educational governance. Nevertheless, significant challenges include technological dependency, the accuracy of religious information, algorithmic bias, data privacy, plagiarism, weakening pedagogical authority, and the risk of reducing Islamic education to a technocratic activity. This article proposes a Human-Centered Islamic AI Education paradigm, positioning human beings, tawhid, morality, public benefit, and social responsibility at the center of AI utilization.
