Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on cognitive and affective learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education through a literature review. The method used is qualitative library research with a descriptive-analytical approach to synthesize concepts from various relevant sources. The findings indicate that intrinsic motivation encourages deep information processing, resulting in solid cognitive understanding, and serves as a foundation for authentic value internalization, consistency of religious behavior, and spiritual appreciation. Extrinsic motivation is effective for basic cognitive achievement and early habit formation but has limitations in building deep understanding and tends to produce situational compliance that is fragile and lacks spiritual depth on the affective domain. Both types of motivation can interact positively when extrinsic motivation functions as an entry point towards internalization that ultimately fosters intrinsic motivation. This study implies the need for a reorientation of PAI learning strategies towards more dialogical, reflective, and meaningful approaches. It is recommended that teachers design learning experiences that connect material to students' real lives, create psychologically safe environments, and utilize extrinsic motivation wisely as a bridge to build students' intrinsic love for Islamic teachings
